Why do we have black grime coming out of our faucets after we hooked up to City water in Home Place?

According to John Duffy, our Director of Utilities, this is likely that the water pressure to the house is higher than what the home well was putting out. This can mean that the increased pressure is scouring the existing home piping and the black grime is iron and manganese deposits that had built up on the piping.

It typically clears up fairly quickly, but there are cases that it may take longer. Opening up all the faucets, including outdoor hose bibs can speed this process.

If it does not clear up our City Utilities Department can come to the house to investigate further. It could be related to the hot water heater, and/or existing water softener. There is no charge for this service, and it can be arranged by calling 317-733-2855.
