How will the city address parking issues near new Walnut Street extension between Range Line Road and Monon Blvd?
The City has been keeping an eye on this area and for the most part it is fairly consistent with what takes place in other parts of the City, namely in the Arts and Design District.
Parking on either side of Walnut doesn’t appear to be an issue in getting to or from Veterans and Monon Blvd. The road was designed for this, and to accommodate a fire truck. Having a more narrow road is a traffic calming mechanism and fits with our standards for similar streets in the area.
In the long term, the City Engineer anticipates there to be on-street parking on the south side of Walnut Street, once development to the south has taken place. During any construction activities for new development, he anticipates the parking on the south side of the roadway to be completely removed for these activities.
We will also take a look at any key locations where the parking may be a problem, namely closer to the intersection with the Monon.
