Regarding new downtown street names, how long will the Post Office deliver mail to the “old address” vs. the new?
Good question. For that, we turned to the authority, the U.S. Postal Service and they did not set a specific time frame.
According to Mary Richardson, A/AMS Manager, Indiana District, US Postal Service, here is the procedure that will be followed.
With this type of change – where the street name changes but the numbers stay the same – the Post office will update their database with the new name and add an “alias” for the old street name. This alias remains in their database unless it would need to be removed for some operational purpose, which does not happen very often.
Mail carriers will be instructed to deliver mail for either street name. But patrons should attempt to notify all correspondents ASAP.
