Can Carmel Police do anything to slow down dangerous bikers on the Monon?
We checked with the Carmel Police Department and they say that when calls for service allow, they always like to put officers on the Monon, especially in the most congested areas.
But as with any area in our city, resources do not allow constant supervision for those areas.
But as with any area in our city, resources do not allow constant supervision for those areas. But they will certainly make sure our folks know there is a rising concern and continue to get additional presence.
However, in the 2025 budget, Carmel Parks will request funding for three Parks Resource Officers (PRO) similar to officers working in the schools. If approved, those officers will provide protection to Parks facilities including the Monon.
CPD has used social media to remind everyone about the speed limits on the Monon. The basic speed limit is 20 miles per hour except for the busy stretch between 111th and 136th streets and the east-west Hagan-Burke Trail, when the speed limit is lowered to 15 miles per hour.
Michael W. Klitzing, Carmel’s Director of Parks and Recreation clarifies further:
“We are still working out the details with CPD regarding the Park Resource Officer (PRO) program, and I think we fully expect the program to evolve once it is staffed as we learn along the way. I do anticipate the PROs spending some time in the various parks and greenways, so it is foreseeable they will be able to spend some time on the Monon Greenway, at least periodically.
I would not want to suggest the Monon Greenway will be their primary responsibility, as the highest priority (especially during summer) is The Waterpark and Monon Community Center. The PROs will serve as a valuable conduit between CCPR and CPD, which I think will afford us even greater coordination to proactively address issues in the parks and greenways. It is also my hope that CPD will be able to assign the SROs to assist in the parks as they did this summer.”
